I already have other mikrotik switches so adding in a mikrotik router just felt perfect. The first day of setup was a challenge with my knowledge base putting me at a disadvantage. I knew enough to follow along with the first time setup guide but also enough to try and deviate beyond in an attempt to hit stage two before getting my bearings. My network has been growing far too quickly (using the CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+RM and CRS504-4XQ-IN) as my home lab data needs have exploded and this router showed just how much I needed to stop and take a long look at everything to better configure. I was trying to have my truenas server run so many things that the mikrotik supported out of the box. Case and point would be wireguard, I spent hours trying to get it working on my truenas server before finding the router has it built in and it worked with almost zero headache. I would recommend unless you have already built out a router OS end to end stack before to stop and walk through the baby step guide, make notes as you go rather than jumping ahead and once it is all active using the guard rails then go back and start tinkering to your heart's content. It can be hard as the guides want you to use the management port for incoming isp and I kept trying to skip over that and bind it to one of the sfp ports but it was better to follow the instructions first, understand it all as a package then move things to better match your end goal. One final bit on documentation is that Mikrotik has a tresureturove of documentation out there and if you take the time to read and understand it you can do all kinds of things with their ecosystem so I strongly recommend that you deep dive that wall of text.
