## Description

This unorthodox dream western by Robert Altman (Nashville) may be the most radically beautiful film to come out of the New American Cinema that transformed Hollywood in the early 1970s. It stars Warren Beatty (Bonnie and Clyde) and Julie Christie (Don t Look Now) as an enterprising gambler and a bordello madam, both newcomers to the raw Pacific Northwest mining town of Presbyterian Church, who join forces to provide the miners with a superior kind of whorehouse experience. The appearance of representatives of a powerful mining company with interests of its own, however, threatens to be the undoing of their plans. With its fascinating flawed characters, evocative cinematography by the great Vilmos Zsigmond (Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Heaven s Gate), and soundtrack that innovatively interweaves overlapping dialogue and haunting Leonard Cohen songs, McCabe & Mrs. Miller brilliantly deglamorized and revitalized the most American of genres. TWO-DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES - New 4K digital restoration- Audio commentary from 2002 featuring director Robert Altman and producer David Foster- New documentary on the making of the film, featuring actors René Auberjonois, Keith Carradine, and Michael Murphy; casting director Graeme Clifford; and script supervisor Joan Tewkesbury- New conversation about the film and Altman s career between film historians Cari Beauchamp and Rick Jewell- Featurette from the film s production, shot on location in 1970- Q&A from 1999 with production designer Leon Ericksen, hosted by the Art Directors Guild Film Society- Archival footage from interviews with cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, in which he discusses his work on the film- Gallery of stills from the set by photographer Steve Schapiro- Excerpts from two 1971 episodes of The Dick Cavett Show featuring Altman and film critic Pauline Kael - Trailer- PLUS: An essay by film critic Nathaniel Rich

Review: Superb 4K restoration of a great and unique looking film - Criterion did a great job here by respecting the way the movie looked. It had this (intended) look of an old and faded postcard and the 4K greatly enhances this look in just the right way. I'm so glad that they didn't try to "improve" it (as they seem to be doing more and more lately in their 4K's Or perhaps I was just unlucky in picking the ones where they overdid the cleaning up...)
Review: Love this movie and soundtrack! - One of my favorite movies of all time. Best soundtrack with Leonard Cohen. Excellent.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Best soundtrack with Leonard Cohen. Excellent.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ultimate anti-western from the great Robert Altman.

Robert Altman's McCabe and Mrs. Miller portrayed, back in the 1970s, the gritty and realistic kind of west we would see decades later portrayed in the series Deadwood. It was revolutionary at the time it was made and turned the western genre on its ear. It portrayed this quickly slapped together mountain gold town so realistically you can practically feel the cold and the rain on your face while watching it. Warren Beatty plays McCabe, who opens a high-class house of ill repute the likes of which these prospectors never expected to find in a middle of nowhere town like this. Julie Christie is Mrs. Miller, McCabe's business partner and head Madame of the house. They prosper so well, men soon arrive in town representing clients who want to buy the house from McCabe outright, and their clients are men who would rather put a bullet in someone than take no for an answer, people who make offers which cannot be refused, in the true "Godfather" sense of the expression. But McCabe does foolishly say no to their first offer in an attempt to raise the stakes. And that leads to all that follows. How it all turns out, I will not share in credence to those who've not seen the movie. Few films create the feeling of having truly lived in a REAL western gold mining town as McCabe and Mrs. Miller. Love it or hate it, this is a one of a kind film like no other western and is considered an anti-western classic. I recommend it highly.
