One reviewer said packing tape would have worked just as well.** A: The 3M Interior Transparent Weather Sealing Tape is indeed heavier than clear packing tape but also more of a flexible, "vinyl" kind of material. Packing tape will not conform to the transitions between glass and frame as well and I believe if left exposed to constant temperature changes, humidity and direct sunlight it would dry and become brittle, much the same as it does on cardboard boxes after lengthy periods. The 3M tape I applied to a bedroom window in April 2012 is still doing the job of sealing air leaks as well today, as when first applied. I just don't think clear packing tape would have lasted this long. As another posted replied, this tape is also nearly invisible once applied. **Q: Would it work to cover the aluminum on the inside of the window to avoid condensation?** A: To me it seemed to just be really thick packaging tape. On the other hand you could use some super sticky semi-permanent tape to get the job done. This tape falls somewhere in the middle. It’s easy to work with, but it doesn’t maintain its stickiness as easily when taping corners and tricky spots. Works well if you have a completely flat surface/gap you are covering. If you can tape a flat surface in one application, then you are good, but if you need to pull the tape up and reseat it, then your stickiness loses a bit. I wouldn’t mind trying a different product that can hold better even with corners and reseating the tape. But, 3M is kinda the king of clear tape. This 10 yard roll got me About 3-4 windows (bottom half) of coverage. If you’ve got drafty windows, live where you have a major cold weather event not so often and have no plans to replace your windows soon: give this a try. I did clean my surface, but I admit I did not use alcohol to clean the surface as they suggest. Also, I suggest applying this a day or so before you need it so it last as long as you need it.
