We did that to display some decorative glasses **Q: I see that the width of the shelf is snown as 3.93" but what is the actual width of the flat, usable space between the 2 vertical pieces?** A: The flat, usable space is three inches. **Q: Would these shelves be sturdy enough to hold books?** A: I don't think sturdiness would be the issue, they're not deep enough to hold books. They are only like 3 1/2 to 4 inches deep. **Q: Are these paintable? I didn't have a drill, but I just hammered in the screws to make room for the anchors, then hammered in the anchors. You will need a level though. I installed this in about 15 to 20 minutes. I'm not sure how sturdy this product is, so I will update my review if I find that it is not sturdy. I think it looks good otherwise and it serves its purpose. I purchased this item on sale on Amazon Prime day $8 off. Bought these shelves because they were exactly 31.5" in length: Perfect for attaching to the back of Billy Book case! I used 4"L x 3"H x ¾"W Thickness 3mm Iron Right Angle L Brackets and drilled holes to the extreme sides of these shelves to screw it to the back of the Book case.and voila....a place to store my wife's boxes lol. Just covered the holes with the included stickers and I think it turned out great!This thing matched soo well with the black brown finish of the billy book case, the black brown finish of our drawer and the black brown finish of the mirror.
