But since it didn't, I'm very, very glad that it exists now. It's on the "Read or else" stack for both of my teen Aspies, and it may have saved the life of a young adult friend of ours who was sent off into the world by his parents without anything like sufficient independent living skills.For teens and young adults on the autism spectrum - or who simply need extra help with these skills - this is absolutely a must read. There's nothing else like it out there, and it will save a lot of pain and hardship. For parents of these young people, it's a terrific guide to helping your child become independent. For older folks, it's worth the trip back in time so you can better understand the past and get tips for the present and the future.I work with thousands of families who have autism in their family tree, and I have been singing its praises all over the place. Lynne Soraya has written a comprehensive, practical, and at times profoundly philosophical guide to navigating the world without the social sureties that many of us take for granted. She writes clearly and eloquently about the challenges posed by the "unwritten rules" of social behavior and advises in very practical terms how to" deal with system overload," find a job or a roommate, use a debit card and an ATM, and approach the emotional dimension of sex. As a Jungian analyst, I appreciate her "out of the box" application of the Myers-Briggs typology test, mindfulness, and even acting classes to the autism toolkit. And as the author of a novel about an Aspie protagonist with a charming logomania, I love how she concludes her book with a section on idioms. The writing style is extremely supportive rather than punitive, and the tone is more "this can be a challenge - here are some tips" versus "your life is a disaster, TRY HARDER" that I've encountered in other books.
