What about if the blade is sharpened?** A: Definitely not rust proof. If you immerse this in salt water and leave it, it will rust out. The VG-10 TiCN PVD blade might do ok, but it's edge, and the entire steel frame and spike will be destroyed after a few days. The only truly fully rust proof knife I would recommend is the Spyderco Salt series of knives. There are others, but those are the best and not that expensive. I have gone scuba diving with those and left them with no rinsing for days or weeks, not a spot of rust anywhere. **Q: is it made in USA ?** A: As indicated by the previous responses, the steel is made in Japan and the knife is made in China. The liner lock for the blade is very strong and the lock for the Marlin Spike is super strong as well. The 440 stainless will hold up well in salt conditions and the knife overall is weighty. The only major flaw with the knife overal is the Spike release. Traditionally, and like the 1.0 version, this doubles as a lanyard eyelet as there is no belt clip or case. Mariners knives almost always are attached to a lanyard. This knife forgo's the lanyard slot for a bottle opener and a knife shaped cutout instead of a proper lanyard slot. One can still be fassioned, however its not as straightforward as it needs to be to be done right. Takeaway, the knife is fantastic and I really like it.
