I attached them to the main vertical pole, and I don’t have the problems with them slipping that other users did, as the tension on them is vertical, not horizontal. I bought two of these cleats to complete my bird feeder pulley system, and they were exactly what I needed. Works great just what we needed

I ordered 2 of these Sea-Dogs and one arrived as a repaired torn-open package with loose nuts stuck to the scotch tape right on the package edge, of being lost. I proceeded fearfully, looking at Amazon's on-line picture to assemble (not even a finished picture on the package) and was successful, even without directions. This = 4, not a 5. Finished attaching and it works great for my needs.
