THIS is a great alternative. Not only does it work great for us, you can utilize it in any vent. My bf used one mount on the middle vent for iPhone maps. I usually placed my phone in the cup holder, but now I use the secondary mount on the passenger vent for convenience. Our phone cases from Luuvitt and Caseology, which are a two piece bumper and housing case, work well with the metal plates and has a solid magnetic hold. I will mention that I use both clips because I have two different phone cases I alternate with. I have a iPhone 7 Plus and occasionally use an "otter box" like case which the rotatable clip cannot hold at all. I think that the magnet on that clip is not strong enough, however, the non-adjustable clip held it just fine. The rotatable clip is able to hold my thinner case with ease. I would mention that if you have slanted air vents like me that your phone may sit slightly upward if that is a bother. I tried putting it on my driver side air vent but the phone was too heavy and too horizontal so it just slided down. I moved it to the center console air vent and there is more of a elevation so the phone is able to be stationary. So if you have a big and heavy phone, try a elevation area.
