Best regards. **Q: can you replace the chuck for use with hex bits?** A: It holds the longer, 1/4 inch hex bits quite well, especially the impact or quick release style. There's teeth on the edges of the jaws part way in that seem to help. Just be sure to tighten the shell a good deal. I just got a three prong chuck with a hex shank for impact drivers, and it allows me to use round shank bits as well, though adds a few inches to the whole setup. You can get a WoodOwl square to 1/4 hex adapter that also works well for the short bits, like screwdriver bits, or Taytools also has a couple of larger hex adapters for modern auger bits etc. **Q: What is the chuck size? 1/2"** A: My set of augers have 3/8" as largest hex shank. Works well with all of them. May accommodate a 1/2" but I haven't tried it. **Q: is a 12" brace too big and should I use a 10" brace instead?** A: The larger the brace the more Torque it will produce as you turn the handle. Very high quality carpenters brace manufactured in Taiwan. Ball bearing race to end handle making it very smooth during use. Will only accept square tapered shank auger bits. My set has screw nose bits which are self-feeding & require no forward force during drilling. So, it costs as much as a cheap cordless drill. The bits are not cheap but can be re-sharpened with a 3 square file. My auger bits are very old & imperial not metric sizes. Very satisfying to use hand tools that still work!I'm a carpenter joiner by trade.
