The diffuser fits pretty tight in the aluminum channel. But yes, You can remove it very easily. **Q: If used under kitchen cabinets, can you see the light dots on shiny counter? Does cover affect brightness of lights?** A: We have a shiny counter and I installed these with a Hue Lightstrip. We can see the individual dots from the lights on the counter. They are a little less definate but for sure they can be seen. They do not take much away from the brightness at all. That said, we installed these channels and lights only weeks ago and I am very happy with the result. They look professional and it seems that they will last a long time. From what I learned you need a deeper channel and denser filter to make the dots more defused. **Q: What is the outside width of the channel?** A: My spares measure 18.034mm or .710 inch **Q: Can these be used outside in a driveway?
