We did use the poles to add a standard blue tarp in front our tent to give us a little porch for shoes during the rain. They worked well and seemed quite sturdy. We just used some rope and extra tent stakes to secure them. I like that they are adjustable as well. It would be nice if they folded up a bit smaller, but since we were in a drive up site, it didn't matter too much for us. If you were backpacking or had to hike to your site, it might be more of an issue. We haven't used the poles yet so the quality remains to be seen. I'm giving 1 star because this listing is terrible. I was looking for poles and also needed a tarp. Because the description for the POLES talked about the tarp, I assumed it came with one. When the poles showed up without a tarp, I went back and see there are multiple colors of poles, one of which is a tarp and the description is all about the tarp. Terribly confusing listing and now I'm leaving on a camping trip with heavy rain expected and no tarp. I'm very unhappy. This could easily have been avoided by simply separating the listings for the tarp and the poles. Now that I have to go out and buy a tarp separately, if these poles are any good I will return and update to give credit where it is due. In the meantime, be careful what color you are choosing to make sure you get the item(s) you were expecting.
