It was purchased for a 6YO cousin, but all the kids (and adults!) were clamoring over it. It was so easy to use - take it out of the box, fill it with batteries and plug it into the TV!It does take 5 AA batteries. Fortunately, we had them ready. It worked fine with rechargeables. We tried it on 3 different TVs and had good results with all three. I was prepared for it to be difficult to focus, but it worked great for us. Just be a little patient with it and you'll get some great results. The pictures on the TV were very sharp.There are 3 levels of magnification - 100x, 200x, and 400x. It's not like a microscope where you have fine tuning, but you can adjust the distance at which you hold it slightly.This is a very cool toy. It really doesn't work well. It takes forever to focus and actually "see" anything. Both boys ended up using it as a pretend "laser blaster gun" and not for its intended purpose, despite the fact that they both love science. Two years later, I dug it out to try to see if their age would affect their patience with trying to see things magnified with the very expensive laser-blaster-gun-thingy...but to no avail.
