I was pleasantly surprised that the basket has a weight attached to the bottom to keep it in place. The handle seems study too. **Q: How do you remove the weight?** A: I did not design this product, but my best guess is that the weight was molded into the product so it would not, could not come loose from the bottom of this basket. If the weight feature of this pool skimmer basket were removed a gaping hole in the basket bottom would result and debris in pool water could not be captured. The weight is designed to prevent the basket from floating up and unseating itself from the round skimmer opening, thereby ensuring it remains in position to capture pool water debris before it can be sucked into the pool filter.
