So, why wasn't my food getting digested right??? I have some pretty bad health problems. That's why I try to eat such a healthy diet now. I am a diet controlled diabetic, who is now off medication thanks to my diet. But, my biggest health problems are Celiac Disease & Crohn's Disease. Those two auto immune diseases led to my Malabsorption Syndrome. If you're not familiar with that, it's when your body doesn't absorb the nutrients from your foods. The doctor's sites describe it as:Malabsorption syndrome refers to a number of disorders in which the intestine can’t adequately absorb certain nutrients into the bloodstream. It can impede the absorption of macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, and fats), micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), or both.So, in effect, a person could even be overweight and their body can be literally starving to death. That's simplifying it, but that's pretty much what can happen.* Digestive Enzymes are Completely Different from Probiotics. I pretty much thought they were the same thing.* Probiotics are LIVING and are typically Bacterial, but there are also some Yeast Species, while Enzymes are Not Living, even though they also Aid in Digestion.* Enzymes are Proteins and your body Produces Enzymes in several of your Body's Cells. Then the Body Secretes them when it Needs to, into the Digestive Tract. Digestive Enzymes are supposed to break the large nutritional molecules, including carbs, proteins and fats, into smaller molecules. Then your intestines can absorb them.* Probiotics can also assist with vitamin & mineral absorption & help alleviate lactose intolerance, plus they produce Vitamin K. So, while Probiotics do help you, they're not the whole story. Digestive Enzyme are Extremely Important. So, what do you do when your body isn't cranking everything out right????This is all I know, six weeks after starting on Digestive Enzymes, I started feeling better and having LESS STOMACH PAIN. When I mean Less Stomach Pain, I mean that my stomach has HURT for 27 years. You get used to it, but if you have flares of Crohn's Disease & Celiac both, you know what I mean. When I totally changed my diet to vegetable based (very little meat-but some) I Totally went OFF Pain medication, medication for my Crohn's, Arthritis medication & several other meds. Yes, I still have pain, but with the change of diet & digestive enzymes, I was able to improve a lot of my health problems. I still have a bit of Malabsorption Syndrome & probably always will have, but I'm greatly improved. The truth is, if you DON'T NEED THEM, they probably won't do much. If you DO NEED THEM, they probably will greatly improve your health.Hope my story has helped someone understand the role digestive enzymes play a little better. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Not the worst but not the best for me *by K***A on January 1, 2013* Based on reviews I tried Life Extension rather than reordering the Doctor's Best Digestive Enzymes since this cost significantly less but I didn't find they work as well. I imagine to some degree it is a matter of what works best with the individual system because I see that the Rainbow Light Advanced Enzyme System rate high and didn't work for me at all. These work better than the Rainbow but not as well as the Dr's Best for me. I'm almost done with the bottle and I'll pay the extra money for the Dr's Best which I find work better than any other I've tried. I found them while I was on vacation in Sonoma and as traveling frequently does to me my stomach became quite upset while sightseeing. I went into a health food store and bought these put of desperation because they were really expensive there but within a half hour my stomach settled down. I've never had anything work that fast. I hate taking prescriptions for gastrointestinal issues when natural digestive enzymes do the job better if there the right ones. For me that's Dr's Best and while they are a little pricier then the Life Extension and Rainbow Light Advanced they are half the price on Amazon than I paid for the first bottle at that health food store in Sonoma. For me worth the money but both the others rate higher so again it may be a matter of finding the right one for your system. If you've been in my shoes, you know what it is like to be with a group of people and try to find nice ways to stay behind the group, stand with your legs crossed while talking to others, or run to a bathroom just to get some relief.I purchased this product on the recommendation of a friend who researched MANY enzyme supplements (for the purpose of selling in a doctor's office) and this was one of four companies/products that she recommended both because of the amount and type of enzymes included, and the manner in which the product is produced and packaged. The other three products can only be purchased through a health care representative and are much MORE expensive.After receiving this product, I began taking one pill just before eating and all I can say is, "hallelujah!" The constant gas and bloating are GONE! If I skip a dose (usually because I forget to take it) I am reminded later that it was not a good idea.
