I needed it to adjust the vertical position of a speaker/tweeter in a special sonic resonance method test. It worked very well and is reasonably priced. ### ⭐⭐ Wobbly *by C***V on Reviewed in the United States on 1 May 2024* By the time I went to use it, the return deadline had passed. I bought it with the intent to put a geode on it for display. Great idea. Only this thing isn't stable. It wobbles. And it is not fit for that purpose. I am not sure what other purpose this might serve, but a lighter object would fall right off. I am not happy. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A good little stand if you tweak it a little. *by L***U on Reviewed in the United States on 7 July 2023* I got this to compliment my 8x8 stand, which is big and sturdy, but I don't always NEED big and sturdy.First of all, if you dabble in chemistry at any serious level, you need some basic equipment. First, you need some glassware (test tubes, beakers, flasks, ect). Second, you need a source of heat (Bunsen burner, alcohol burner, whatever). Third, you need something to support your apparatus (lab stands, lab jacks, ect).The first time you set up the most basic distillation with a simple Liebig condenser, you will learn very quickly how essential support equipment is. And your nice distillation setup sure looks nice and pretty, until you have to prop up your receiving flask on a box to get it high enough. Raise your hand, chemists, if you've put a receiving flask on a box.Enter the lab jack. The lab jack is to the height adjustment of your apparatus as the tractor is plowing fields. SURE you can plow a field by hand. Just like you can prop your receiving flask on a box. Farmers, raise your hands if you plow 100 acres with a hoe and a shovel. And just as farmers use tractors instead of a shovel, you should use a lab jack instead of a box to give things the height they require.This little 4x4 stand is the perfect companion to my big 8x8 stand for when I don't need a 1000ml setup, maybe I'm working with tiny amounts and my 150ml flask is all that's required. No sense having a 150ml flask on an 8" jack. Or maybe I need 2 jacks, one might not need to be that big.It did have a bit of a problem from the factory, however. Unlike my 8" jack, which had 0 play, this little 4" came delivered with some pretty significant wobble. Now, you might say, what's a little wobble? It's one thing to be making a volcano out of baking soda and acetic acid (vinegar). I would spill that on the front of me and laugh.But I don't know a chemist alive that wants a wobbly stand supporting a nitration mixture. Some chemists shudder at the WORD "nitration", lol. BUT. This stand is fixable, you just have to put a little effort into it. This is how you get this nice and wobble-free (or pretty darn close to it):Open the unit to full extension.Look at each of the connection points between the arms and the base / top. Any place you see a gap, it will wobble and must be tightened.Loosen one of the set screws using the 2mm hex (Allen) wrench.Using your one hand, spread the arms apart until they are touching both sides of the top or bottom, then holding it in place, tighten the set screw.Of course you don't want it SO tight it binds. Just barely in contact with both sides, no visible gap.Do this for the top and bottom, and what came from the factory pretty wobbly is now a pretty decent little stand. No matter what you're doing with this stand, I recommend performing this procedure for maximum stability from an important piece of equipment.I deducted 1 star for this not being set right from the factory. Setting these gaps is actually part of the assembly procedure, and since it comes assembled, those gaps should be set. My 8x8 stand came perfectly aligned, and is rock solid with not a hint of wobble. I recommend the manufacturer of these take the necessary steps to train their assembly personnel how to set the play on these properly, so these are safe for use in a lab the moment they take it from the box. It's a good stand, and I do recommend it, but it must be adjusted before any serious use.As a PS, the stand I received is significantly different from the one pictured. The one pictured has nylon spacers and plain metal arms with phillips head screws. The one I received had no nylon spacers (which I prefer), and what looks to me like a much better cast arm instead of what looks to be a stamped one in the photo. It is also secured at the midpoint with E-clips, not screws. Which, honestly, I prefer the E-clips also because they won't work lose...ever. In short, the stand I got is actually BETTER than I expected, in terms of build quality. I have uploaded a photo of the one I received. Of course, that's no guarantee that's the one YOU will receive.
