I'm not sure if the negative reviewers got defective items but I've already used it to hold all kinds of hardware and screws from room "organizing" projects until it fulfills its ultimate desk organizing purpose, it doesn't have a scratch on it even with fairly rough treatment. There are screws holding it together and it doesn't look cheap. The drawers slide smoothly and I'd definitely buy it again.
