The last burner we had went through nearly a year of daily use (3-4 heating sessions per day) with a simple modification. Normally, the bowl where you would light the coals touches the coils ever so slightly. What I did was made said bowl slightly concave so that it does not touch the coils. The easiest way to do this was to simply turn the bowl upside down and give it a few light taps with a hammer. That's it. It's also not a bad idea to dump the ash out every so often when the burner has cooled down.
