The first one I got was pure junk - impossible to assemble with provided parts. The collar nut (outside) binds horribly on the inside pipe thread bulkhead making it impossible to tighten to the wall of the pail. It is not cross threaded. But it is easy to see that the threads are being knocked down by the nut because of improper machining. Hard to believe the seller would ship something like this. Should have realized it was a problem when I couldn't thread it on more that a 1/2 turn by hand. UPDATE: The replacement is excellent and is working as expected.
