Trust me. I started out using a this with an aluminum ruler and the ruler was too light and keep moving, resulting in uneven cuts. The rail has an anti-slip backing that prevents it from moving. GET THE RAIL. **Q: how thick of foam can it cut thru, I have some that is an inch thick?** A: Mine cuts up to 1/2" thick foam board. But it would work best hooked onto the WC3001 Channel Rail. And make sure they use scrap foam board only under what they are cutting.
