## Overview

I’m a Good Dog is a beautifully illustrated, heartfelt tribute to pit bulls, dispelling myths and celebrating their true nature as loving, loyal family pets and heroes. Authored by pit bull advocate Ken Foster, this used book in good condition combines inspiring stories and vivid photography to restore the breed’s reputation and inspire responsible ownership.

## Description

Filled with inspiring stories and photographs, this heartfelt tribute to the pit bull celebrates one of America’s most popular yet misunderstood dogs. Perhaps more than any other breed, the pit bull has been dogged by negative stereotypes. In truth, pit bulls are innately wonderful family pets, as capable of love and good deeds as any other type of dog. Setting the record straight, Ken Foster sings the praises of pit bulls in I’m a Good Dog , a gorgeously illustrated, tenderly written tribute to this most misunderstood of canines. Founder of the Sula Foundation, which promotes responsible pit bull ownership in New Orleans, and the author of two acclaimed books about abandoned dogs, Foster has made it his mission to bring overlooked canines into the limelight. I’m a Good Dog traces the fascinating history of this particularly maligned breed. A century ago, the pit bull was considered a family dog, featured in family photos and trusted as loving companions for children. More recently, pit bulls have been portrayed by the media as stereotypes of everything they are not. Foster shatters that reputation through moving profiles of pit bulls that serve as therapy dogs, athletic heroes, search-and-rescue dogs, and educators, not to mention as loving pets. Foster also profiles many pit bull lovers, from Helen Keller and Dr. Seuss to actor Todd Cerveris, who took his pit bull on tour with him for the musical Spring Awakening . Proving that there’s much to love and nothing to fear, I’m a Good Dog restores the pit bull to its rightful place as friend, family member, athlete and entertainer.

Review: They ARE Good Dogs! - This is a beautiful book, full of gorgeous pictures and really lovely words - done in a coffee-table style. It's easy to get through in one sitting, and you will go back time and time again to look at those beautiful bullies. Beside its obvious message that pit bulls are sweet, lovable couch potatoes, what really stood out for me is the riotous variety of colors that pit bulls come in - truly every color under the sun. I have two pits, Alice and Cooper, both rescued. Cooper is a beautiful black and white, traditional-looking pit bull, 3 years of age, adopted at age 1 from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. The worst thing he has ever done is steal shoes (unfortunately it seems to be a crime of which he is completely unrepentant and which he apparently intends to continue committing), and Alice is an almost-white pit-mix with one big brown spot around her right eye. She's about a year and a half old and was adopted 6 months ago from our local shelter, looking like a skeleton. She has fattened up nicely, and is a total marshmallow full of love. Her only crime is excess kisses. (Incidentally, when I adopted her from the shelter, it was FULL of pit bulls, as most of them are.) Anyone who loves pit bulls like I do, will love this book. It would make a great gift. If you are familiar with Mr. Foster's other books, "The Dogs Who Found Me" and "Dogs I Have Met", you already know of his love for dogs and particularly pit bulls. Highly recommended.
Review: A must read for any dog lover - I read this in a couple of hours. It is a simple and thoughtful book about some of the facts regarding the most misunderstood and loved dog. I bought this for my neighbor who adopted a pitbull type dog and didn't realize it until several people pointed it out. Because of the misinformation toward these sweet dogs, I can tell she is hesitant to let her just act like a dog. Like any dog (or human), setting prejudices against her will not let her excel toward her best self. The sweet dog is afraid of everything and seems extremely depressed. She only lights up when she sees or interacts with another animal, including cats. She was severely abused in her previous situation and is lucky she found her current family who want to sincerely help her. I think they just can't get past the ignorant people who spew total bs about the "breed". I am hoping my neighbor will read this book and realize her new dog is just a dog, only better. Pitbull type dogs are the most incredibly lovable dogs I have ever known. They are the original American dog and are so kind. It is a shame that the media and human ignorance has made them into anything less than the perfect family dog, and the perfect dog period. If you are lucky enough to have a pitty in your family, you know what I mean. To those who don't yet...what are you waiting for? You won't be able to believe how you could love someone so much. Just please be a good human to them. As with any dog, be responsible and protect them. Be a positive voice for them and help bring the public perception back to the way it used to be.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ SHOULD HAVE 10 STARS!
*by M***A on July 13, 2025*

My current best companion is a pit bull, as were the 3 dogs I had before her. I absolutely loved this book! The pictures are beautiful and the writing is exceptional (also the quality of the physical book itself is exceptional for a paperback). A great book to have on your coffee table so visitors will pick it up and be drawn into it! It is filled with accurate information and engaging, compassionate (& sometimes funny!) experiences of the author and others who have known and loved pit bulls. I highly recommend it (& if you know someone who still believes the negative myths about pitties, encourage them to read this). Five-plus stars!
