I can't say if they help for back pain per se, but while I don't always have that, if I am in random shoes or barefoot for a long time, I will have back pain. Unbalanced feet throw the whole spine out of alignment. My feet seriously over-pronate, for my entire life. Do you know the cause of your back pain? You might check into "negative heel shoes," like Earth or Vionic. They are known for correcting posture and improving back pain.
