Only light pressure is needed to quickly drill through concrete and has the nice shock grip. If you take all the travel out of the shock handle pressing forward then you are pressing too hard. The drill is plenty fast and after about an hour of constant use the housing was fairly warm but not excessively hot. This rotary hammer will definitely replace my old hammer drill. It may lock in other angles, but I have not tried it in angles other than parallel or perpendicular to the handle. I also will mention that this unit has performed admirably and I have absolutely no regrets with my purchase. I was able to remove old tile (put down in the 1950's with thick-set. I found it works best at lower speeds and sharp angles of attack. Take your time and you won't work up any sweat, letting the tool do the work.
