Review: If you need an Atmel clone, this is a pretty good one to get. - It's exactly what it claims to be: a fully compatible version of the ATMEL JTAGICE mkII. Atmel Studio detects it as such and it works exactly the way it's supposed to. And it costs about as much as the real thing, too--but of course Atmel doesn't offer free one-day shipping. :-) One thing that wasn't particularly well documented: Atmel Studio won't use it correctly unless it's connected to an *externally powered* microcontroller. It's a little disappointing that it won't supply power through the six-pin programming header, since so many hobbyist AVR programmers offer that feature. But it does offer DebugWire support, which you can't get from a cheap hobby ISP. For something so pricey, I was pretty disappointed in the software support. It doesn't come with real drivers--it just uses a WinUSB/libusb clone that exports the USB stack to userland. These can be tricky to set up, especially now that Windows 10 insists on signed drivers. I ended up using the Zadig software package to install a compatible driver. This worked but both the website and the driver install program felt pretty shady. It's not like the hobbyist boards that have strong communities and well-built open-source support. So: worth the price? Just as an ISP, not at all. It's more compatible with the official Atmel software, but it turns out that it's just as easy to set up Atmel Studio to use avrdude as a post-build step as it is to use this thing. If that's all you want, save your money and buy one of those $15 SparkFun boards--it'll work out of the box on any OS and give you a lot less grief. Even if you want debugging support, the AVR Dragon is a better buy if you're going to stick with 8-bit AVR MCUs. But if you want full support across most of Atmel's product line, this product seems like a pretty good way to get it.

I've had to re-flash this JTAG (via the upgrade menu item of AVR Studio) three times in order to make it program devices. I'm wondering if its memory gets corrupted for some unknown reason. It will work for awhile and then it will not be able to program devices. After re-flashing it works again.

works wonderfully with atmels studio and is also very fast compared to avr dragon. also works with crossworks for avr (crossworks has a bug, it's not recognized but use it once with atmel studio 4, then it works with crossworks) works connected to usb or a serial port
