It can be used as a pie filling or a pudding. **Q: What do you have to add to the mixture?** A: 2 slightly beaten egg yolks, 1/3 c cold water, 2 c boiling water.... after you boil the mixture stir for 30 seconds then add 1 T butter......that's it for the mixture....see NOTE (in yellow letters) on the box if you want to make a meringue for the pie **Q: is this gluten free?** A: This is an outstanding key lime pie but the box doesn't say gluten free. Can't find it in the stores anymore, so I went to Amazon...Sure as the sky is blue, Amazon has it! So, I've been craving key lime ordered that also. AMAZING!!! I don't understand why people don't like it, or they say it's runny (must not have followed directions, it's easy to make and gets so thick it's hard to not eat it out of the pan!), or smells horrible. It's GREAT!!! Graham cracker crust, real whippd cream...YUM! I use it on a cream cheese layer and cool whip on top. Nice, refreshing dessert! Same with the lemon!!!UPDATE: This is still the BEST lemon pie filling, but since I originally started getting it, the price has increased $7 for three. Ridiculous.
