It would be too small for a larger family. We put it on a cookie tray and it makes counter clean up easy. Heads up, because it's smaller, if you dump too much stuff to fry in it all at once, it'll drop the oil temp which is less than ideal for proper frying quality. Solution - don't over load it. Also someone wrote that the lid breaks off easily. Maybe, but we like how easy it is to remove / install the lid - and we just do it carefully so we don't damage/break the plastic mounting hinge(s).
