I use them at least five days a week while walking, and they can be used for both power walking arm pumping swings or tighter 90° angle short arm swings. I don't recommend them for typical arms-at-the-sides arm motions. They pull on the shoulder joints then. I also used 2 pound weights, but found that after extended walks, say, longer than 3 miles, they started to pull on my shoulders. I can use these for up to 5 miles without too much strain. These are by far the best weights I have ever used, and I feel sure they could be used at home for rehab exercises or gentle weightlifting. Well worth the price.
