The VMH600 has the power ring arond the outside of the front temperature display that changes color according to whether it is heating at full power or running at a lower setting to maintain the room's temperature. **Q: How many btu?** A: Depends on watts. You get about 3.4 BTU/hr for each watt/hr. So if you connect this through a power meter and it says 1500 watts, you are getting 1500 x 3.4 = 5100 BTU/hr of heat. Voltage to your house from the power company is not constant, but fluctuates over time (normally 110 to 130 volts AC) and that affects heater output, but in tiny insignificant amounts that you can't really feel. If you run a space heater at 750 watts typical low setting the BTU's/hr would be half just like the watts are half. A space heater with a stronger fan in it puts out cooler air because the heat is spread out over much more volume of air, but 1500 watts is still 5100 BTU/hr regardless of how evenly it distributes the heat to the room. So space heaters are bought based on features and how you want the heat distributed into the room. Weak fans are better if you want to sit 5 feet in front of the heater and feel lots of heat, but stronger, better fans spread the heat further into the room and provide more even heating. If you have a huge room or outdoors, a heater with a strong fan will not seem to do much, so in that case, you probably want a slower fan and have it blow on you from about 5 feet. But if your goal is to heat a bedroom rather than just one person, a stronger fan will do that better. This heater has a better fan that is designed to spread the heat further into the room rather than to blow onto a person sitting next to it. **Q: Love the unit but it cuts on & off constantly. Didn't expect this; is it normal?** A: Yes. It is normal. There is an adjustable knob to control room temperature. When the room warms up, the heater shuts off. When the room cools off. , it comes back on. If you turn it up all the way, it wont cut off but the room can get very hot. **Q: Some reviews state the vmh600 is noisy others quiet. what is your experience? if noisy was it a defect or the norm for this heater? thank you.** A: The heater is quiet when operating at full force. However, when the heater is in the climate control mode, when it adjusts the speed to just keep the temperature at a fixed level, there is a hum which I found to be very annoying. The hum is not loud, but it is constant. By the way, this is a really well made, sturdy, steel case heater. I have the less expensive models which I really like. Even room heating. Good quality. Low power is almost worthless. *by W***T on Reviewed in the United States on 4 January 2019* Although not as hot (using my hand in front of the heater) as some other heaters I've a had, the heater was very effective for my 10 x 13 room. The heater is being used in an RV with large slide-outs. I tested with the outside temp at 34 degrees F. I suspect the heat spreads out right at the outlet grille, so my hand test doesn't represent all of the heat being output. I think the heater took 5 minutes longer to heat the room compared to another 1500 watt heater I have. The room was less drafty and felt comfortable in every part of the room. The room thermometer on the heater was within 1 degree of a portable thermometer I have, so there was no need to set it to a different temperature to get desired results. Quality of materials is generally excellent. Although I'll admit the remote could have been a bit larger, it was reasonably well made. Reading the small remote buttons can be a challenge...especially in poor light...but I saw no reason to downgrade the product for this reason. Once you know that "-" is on the left and "+" is on the right...with power top and Mode at the bottom...there isn't a need to look at the buttons when using the remote anyway. One final positive point...this is the most quiet air-blowing heater I have tried...and I tried about 5 before settling on this one. If a quiet room to sleep in is important, you can't go wrong with this - unless you need the perfect silence of a passive radiator-type heater.Now, there are negatives. On low power, this thing is almost worthless unless you are heating a broom closet or sitting 3 feet away. Heat is reduced...as well as the fan speed. This "double whammy" makes low power impractical for all but a few situations as I see it. If I needed low power, I'd have rated this product two or three stars. Product quality was good to excellent, but not perfect. There was a slight imperfection (dimple) in the stainless steel on top - so this company does not always make everything perfect. Maybe they would make it right if I exchanged it, but it's not worth the hassle to return it. Back to the remote, it only works if you are pointing it directly at the heater - it's less tolerant than other remotes I've had. It's not an issue once you know how to use it. Lastly, the outer stainless steel chassis had oily stains/smudges right out of the box. Easy to clean with a little bit of dish washing detergent and finish off wiping with rubbing alcohol...but this should never happen with a new product - and especially a higher-end product.I intentionally bought the more expensive 600 model just for the stainless steel look. Buy the 500 to save money as there is no other difference. Would I buy this again? You betcha. Would I carefully inspect the craftsmanship and functionality after receiving the product?
