I opted to sand the existing sub structure flat. The OEM handle is curved. This handle is flat and does not follow the arc of the OEM handle and it will not flex. Your only options are to cut away the old handle (was not going to look good based on the way mine broke) or sand it flat. The benefit of sanding is that you are left with the plastic handle behind this aluminum plate - a benefit on hot days. I used an angle grinder to get it close and then an small orbital sander to finish. I used hot glue to repair the existing cracks and then put this new handle on top. For $30 and two hours of labor, cant get a better outcome on an old car unless you source a whole new door panel. The other option is the Dorman and it requires you to remove the door panel and trim the plastic which is old and brittle and can break. This is an easier go. Best solution I could find.
