I do not have grass, but I find it very helpful for transplanting flowers and trees from pots into the soil. It goes at least 6-8" deep. You don't apply leverage, but you can switch to a regular shovel or get on the ground and use a spade. **Q: does this shovel work for cutting plugs as well as cutting through roots?** A: Yes, the surface area of the shovel is 16.25". I have used this on my yard and it is very handy. **Q: Will this work to dig out a flower bed in a sandy plot?** A: You can't go wrong for this multifunction tool. It's made well. The serrated edge can hack through most smaller roots, speeding up the process. You might still need a clipper or saw on the roots that are over 1/2” or so. Also the shovel is not made of adamantium. Don’t use it as a pry bar, it is a small shovel and can deform if abused.
