The blade....yep, you can grip that socket like a handle. So if you were thinking this is a back up machete, it is, but blade heavy and way off balance; however, it would do in a pinch. Blade and shoe are both formidable in their right, no question. The handle is dark brown wood (not black like the promo images) and not butter-smooth, which works for me as that gives extra grip on the gloves, otherwise expect to sand it down before use or customization.
