The handles are 5 1/2 inches high. I don't know what you consider a large purse but I would say it is not but it is sturdy and can hold more than a 3 inch wide purse due to its generous bottom. The sides taper up making it not thick or wide at the top zipper. The included adjustable shoulder strap makes it so it can be worn as a long crossbody purse or a shorter shoulder purse. **Q: Is this purse shipped folded flat?** A: No, this purse is shipped keeping the shape.
