It is durable, however it is still Mylar, once torn, it will tear all the way. I would use the 3M tape with the string strands to create a place to add grommets, either a folded tab that only holds the grommet and the Mylar is sandwiched in the tape, or sandwich the Mylar and add the grommets similar to the paper reinforcements. This is a good product, I added it under my hammock and it's helped keep the chill off and kept me warm, been using this one pretty close to the 9th or 10th time now. **Q: How does this compare to a heavy weight miltiary casualty blanket?** A: similar, some casualty blankets may not have grommets. The SOL has grommets to use as a shelter. **Q: For people who have actually taken this blanket out at least once: How do you fold it so you can re-pack it back into the bag?** A: Ha! I've used mine three times and gave up after the first attempt. The packaging is just that, for the sale. Fold it the best you can and get a nylon pencil pouch from Wally-World for $1 and put it in that and call it good. **Q: is this as waterproof as a normal tarp?** A: This product is 100% wind and waterproof to shield you from the elemets.
