It's characters with mental illness hurting one another throughout. There were beautiful, poetic parts to it, and the tragic story was well made, beautifully photographed and you can see a lot of care and money went into it. BUT for me, the sadness and grossness of the story was just too much for me.I like horror movies that are entertaining. This wasn't entertainment this was simply 'Let's see how uncomfortable and icky we can make the viewer feel,' along the lines of Human Centipede, which I really disliked immensely. Don't take my word for it, I believe never listen to people's opinions about movies. Formulate your own, but don't expect a feelgood experience. I have seen many serial killer movies and none of them were classified as horror, why this one? There is not a lot of intelligence in the movie making business these days, the movie makers think that because it is in B&W it is creative and artsy, give me a break. This movie should have been in color, Dexter is much more gory and bloody than this movie. Also, the editing was down right pitiful, must have been their first job editing, it is completely amateurish. It is very improbable that an older (very senior) man, with no weapons, would get the upper hand on a very much younger, deranged, man, who has a gun. Or, a 7-8 year old girl overpowers a thirty year old man and maims him severely, and she doesn't even get a scratch. Apparently the director did not know how to explain those either, so, they just edited it out and expect you to not notice; just simply swallow what they are feeding you. People, don't be fooled, just because a movie is in B&W and it moves at a glacial pace and dwells too long on a scene (again, bad editing), doesn't give it a pass for sloppy movie making. Yeah, there are some gross scenes in this movie, like people eating feces gross (that is just an an analogy, it didn't happen in the film), but that's because the director purposely lingers too long on the gross parts just to evoke an unpleasant feeling; you know, manipulate you into thinking it is more disturbing than it actually is. We all have seen gross, disgusting stuff, we just don't stare at it. But, what is really a tragedy, is that there is someone twisted enough to think of this garbage and then convince others that it should be made into a movie and shared with the public. Oh yeah, Hollywierd's favorite passion these days, that they shove down our throats in every movie or TV series, It's in here too. Why? I can see what a lot of the reviewers have said about it relying on the black and white to set it apart. It's very stark and sharp and the B&W cinematography adds a whole dimension to the film. In the end, if the movie seemed good because of the way it looked more than the story or the horror elements, so what? It WAS good, if it used B&W as a crutch, I don't really care because it manages to set itself apart.But it's not like the story and the horror aren't both there. There were some moments that really made me squirm and with the very short running time, it held a good pace. I don't think it's all that some people are talking it up to be, but I can't really get behind the idea that it's a crappy flick that only seems cool because of the way it was shot. Not bad.
