## Description

The Great Wall is an American-Chinese adventure film from director Zhang Yimou (Raise The Red Lantern). Starring Matt Damon, the movie follows an elite force of soldiers as they make a heroic stand atop the Great Wall of China against a horde of monsters that appear every sixty years. The score to The Great Wall was composed by Ramin Djawadi. Best known for his iconic scores to Game of Thrones and Iron Man, Djawadi has also provided the music for Warcraft, Pacific Rim and Westworld among countless other projects. His score to The Great Wall is sweeping and grand featuring rumbling drums, an army of strings and traditional Chinese chanting.

Review: A Beautifully Robust and Epic Score - Ramin Djawadi is as busy of a composer as Michael Giacchino, pumping out quality soundtracks multiple times a year, and this year, he's already had two released, and another Game of Thrones score coming out later this year. One of those two was Gears of War 4, and the other is The Great Wall. The Great Wall is from director Yimou Zhang, who gave us the acclaimed films Hero, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower. Following two scouts who are captured by the Nameless Order, William and Tovar are thrust into a centuries-old war that will soon threaten all of humanity. Being both a monster movie and war epic, The Great Wall does a lot within the span of an hour and forty minutes. Within that time, the movie is brought to life not just by the actors and actresses, stunning production & visuals, or witty script, but the gorgeously epic score from Djawadi. Boasting a female-voiced choir, intense drumming and swift, sweeping strings, Djawadi brings us his most robust and fun outing that calls on the likes of scores such as Steve Jablonsky's "Steamboy" or Klaus Badelt's "Pirates of the Caribbean" (Zimmer gets the credit mainly because of his composition of the theme). The Nameless Order, the first track on the soundtrack, is the best piece and theme that showcases what you will expect to hear further into the score: an epic adventure the likes of which demands to be seen. It starts off with the classic "sweeping" sound, similar to Hans Zimmer's "The Last Samurai," helped along by the enchanting choir, which then builds into the action and pulse-pounding percussion. It's arguably Djawadi's best theme yet, and overall complete, well-rounded score (save for the odd final track, Bridge of Fate, which doesn't fit the musical style). The movie I'll review when the blu-ray is released (though I recommend seeing it on the big screen; it's a visual masterpiece), but the soundtrack gets my highest admiration and rating. A must-own on all fronts.
Review: Magnificent - Throughout the History of Motion Pictures there have been perfect fusions of the Directors vision and the music composer. To name but a few, what would the 1933 'KING KONG ' be without Max Steiner', the 1959 version of 'BEN-HUR 'without Miklos Rosza, or Hitchcock's 'PSYCHO' without Bernard Hermann? They would feel totally different without those scores. Now Composer Ramin Djawadi takes up the mantle with this magnificent score to Director Zhang Yimou's epic film 'THE GREAT WALL'. Unfairly savaged by critics and action fans alike, on repeated viewings the film emerges as an excellent epic proportioned monster movie and it is inconceivable not to have Mr. Djawadi's score behind it. Having honed his craft on Television series such as all seasons of 'GAME OF THRONES', 'PRISON BREAK' , 'WESTWORLD' , 'THE STRAIN' and such films as CLASH OF THE TITANS' and 'WARCRAFT', Mr. Djawadi is a force to be reckoned with and has composed a perfect fusion of percussion and Choral voices to create the heart and soul of Director Yimou's vision. The score stands alone even for people who have not seen the film. I haven't been this excited about a motion picture score since I first heard Basil Poledouris's score to 'CONAN THE BARBARIAN'. It's just that good.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great thematic music.
*by D***N on May 3, 2017*

Ramin Djawadi is one of my favorite composers lately. The quality of the recording is good, though at times I feel I am missing a little bit from the information present in the master recordings. This is to be expected from digital music, though.
