I didn't know what the hooks were for at first but I use them to release the bag much more quickly compared to fussing with the Velcro. I would give it 5 stars except for the fact that they claim the inner pouch is waterproof. It does have a cover flap that will protect your phone, etc. from a gentle or moderate rain, but if you tip it over your stuff will fall out. As it swings back and forth the flap can readjust to allow water to get in. I found myself in a downpour recently and put my phone in my pocket.
