The thermometer read 12 degrees low. I was sad. Then I discovered that the long shaft can be turned to adjust the reading and make it accurate. I needed pliers to turn the shaft (squeeze gently --don't crush the shaft!) and set the needle to the correct temperature (212 F for boiling water).
