    Great book - editing for under age readers needed

My son (age 7) and I are loving all we are learning together about Ninja's. The book is heavy on details about individual ninjas. A little lighter on general ninja info. Mostly it's great to fuel the 7 year old imagination. I wish, for my own understanding a little more historical context was given to the stories.My biggest beef, however are the illustrations. Fun, comic book style and very unrealistic.(Not that it doesn't make for a fun perusal. But for all the historic detail that is given in the book, the more striking illustrations leave a very contrived image.) I've never liked how women especially are portrayed in comics. I love that women are talked about - loved learning that there were ninja women. Didn't like the nearly nude comic rendition of them. Other content relating to women is a bit mature for a 7 year old (references to prostitution, etc.) but I can selectively edit that as we read together. I had to be much more creative editing the pictures (with black and colored markers and a sharpie).So though the book description mentions that it is a great book for all ages, it's on an advanced reading level, and the pictures of women are comic book style, and as such, in my modest opinion, revealing and inappropriate.

If your a ninja fan and want a fun look at historical and legendary ninja this is a fun read. If your a Naruto fan and that's what got you into ninja it's a good book to learn about the real ninja that some of the characters are based on or the legends they are based on such as Jiraiya,Tsunade and Orochimaru all who are part of a classic Japanese story about Jiraiya. It's good and informative while knowing how to keep your intrest with witty dialog. I'll admit I saw the book cover and thought it would be a funny ninja story but instead I was pleasently surprised to find a good historical collection on ninja and those who used them as well.
