## Description

desertcart.com: Hope's 100% Pure Tung Oil, Food Safe Wood Finish, 32 Fl Oz | Food Safe & Waterproof – Penetrates Deep To Protect Wood Indoors & Outdoors With A Natural, Hand-Rubbed Finish : Health & Household

Review: Food safe and worth the cure time - Great for butcher block treatment. This is high quality tung oil and you can tell the difference from the "tung oil finish" products that are mostly varnish and thinner. It's 100% pure with no petroleum distillates or driers cut into it — it smells faintly nutty rather than like paint thinner, and it soaks into the wood instead of sitting on top and forming a plastic-looking film. The consistency is thin enough to penetrate deep, and it cures hard with no tacky or sticky spots left behind. A few thin coats built up a warm satin sheen that really brings out the grain, and water beads on the surface now instead of soaking in and staining. Being food safe once cured is the whole reason I went this route for a food prep surface. Just be patient — pure tung oil cures slowly, so give it real time between coats and don't lay it on thick. Worth the wait.
Review: Food-safe “pure” Tung oil worked great for garden box - Used this as an alternative to pricier cedar garden box oil for a raised garden bed made from Douglas Fir (cedar cost too much). Took a bit to confirm the difference between this “pure” Tung oil and something like Watco “Tung oil finish” that includes additives for drying that aren’t food safe. This product fit the bill and is all natural and food safe. I used about 1/2 - 2/3 of this quart bottle to apply 2 coats on 30-40 linear feet of wood. Will likely use up the rest to reapply on exterior surfaces in late summer or early fall so it can cure a bit before wet/cold winter weather hits. Smells nice and uniquely nutty. Unlike other products like laquer, dutch oil varnish or paint I didn’t need a respirator to avoid headaches, nor other caustic products to clean up. This was really pleasant to work with. Applied very easily with a cloth or brush. It’s like wiping wood with olive oil or something - not super tacky or messy to clean either. Used a bit of odorless mineral spirits to clean up & wash hands, but soap & water cut most of it. Gave the light fir boards a nice even tan that looks great. Similar to, maybe slightly darker than, plain butcher block oil. Only downside is the drying/curing time - you’re supposed to wait at least 7-10 days, ideally a month or more, for it to cure & harden before exposing it to heavy sun or water. We didn’t have time for that so it was outside after only about a week and still retained a bit of the tung oil odor. Hopefully it was waterproof enough to last a while. So far it’s holding up great! Curious to see what it will look like in a year or so …

## Features

- Easy to Use - Tung oil is a natural oil recognized by craftsmen to offer the ultimate hand-rubbed finish for all fine woods; just wipe on and allow the oil to cure at room temperature
- Permeates - Unlike other finishes that form a film on the wood’s surface, tung oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers, cures to a flexible non-oily solid, and becomes part of the wood itself
- Protects - Resistant to moisture, alcohol, oil, and everyday wear for lasting beauty and protection; lasts many times longer than mineral oil and wax based products
- Multi Use - Amazing results on almost any surface that will allow the oil to penetrate - new unfinished wood, weathered wood, stripped wood, concrete floors and countertops, even brick, stone, and cast iron
- Great for Food Contact Surfaces - Since tung oil is considered non-toxic when dry, it is great for cutting boards, butcher blocks, countertops, wooden bowls, wooden utensils, and more
- 100% Pure Tung Oil- Hope's Tung Oil is the “best of the best” pure Tung oil grades. We only use premium oil, pressed from the best Tung nut crops from growers around the world.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this product safe for food surfaces (e.g. is it what should be used on cutting boards)?**
A: Per my bamboo cutting boards, if it is 100% (foodgrade)tung oil (it is nut based too by the way, in case of allergies) then yes! Although you will likely need to mix it with a 100% (food-safe) orange oil solvent.

**Q: can it be used for wood floors?**
A: I think a lot of people are starting to use tung oil, the real stuff- on floors. I haven't used it on floors---just on walls. The benefits are that it is pretty much non-toxic and does not emit harmful fumes as it dries. It does smell a bit while drying, but it is not toxic. It takes a long time to dry and gets harder over time...but is nothing like a polyurethane finish. it can be easily spot refinished, but will not be as durable, or ever have a gloss like a poly finish. If you are going to do a floor--make sure the floor is sanded and very clean. Plan on applying a minimum of three coats...spaced maybe a week apart, with a very light steel wooling between coats. It will be tedious and long--due to the dry and hardening time on each coat. I think if done right, it will yield a very nice finish.

**Q: Do I have to mix this in a ratio with some other compound (it says 32 to 12 in the title)?**
A: No, but the first coat or two penetrate better if you mix in a little turpentine or d-limonine.

**Q: Does this need to be mixed with anything like a solvent or citrus oil or can it just be rubbed on the wood as is?**
A: It depends on what you're using it for and which coat you're on.

1st coat can be thinned to help further penetration. Use Citrus only on food contact items. Mineral spirits or Citrus for all others.

2nd Coat full strength or less thinning.
3rd and sequential coats full strength.
0000 Steel Wool or Brass Wool prior to last coat.

That's one example of an application method. More experience with Tung Oil and the varieties of mixes and applications you'll find a preferred method/mix depending on what you're coating with it.

Hope that helps.
Cheers...
