I also copied the template onto a blank full sheet shipping label, which allowed me to peel and stick the template, to get it level. I installed mine in a vertical main return air duct, instead of on the supply side, so that any zapped pollen or virus particles kept captured by the 4"thick filters on our Carrier heat pump. One important tip: Never look at the bulbs unless you have welders glasses or the equivalent. UV bulbs can burn your retina. If you want to test the unit before you cut holes in the ductwork, place it in a closet or laundry room, close the door, and plug it in to an outlet outside that room or closet. You should see blue light coming under the door.. Unplug it before opening the door, and now you now it's a working unit, without risking damage to your retina. Lastly, I love that spare bulbs are included. The replacement bulbs for our Sterilaire unit cost $200 per pair, making it prohibitively expensive, whereas even at year 3, these bulbs can be bought for $30 a pair. Big difference. Now I need to find a smart plug to sync with my smart Tstat, so the bulbs are onky on when the air handler is running. Review: UV is good way to kill virus and bacteria - This replaced a unit that we had installed in '07. The old bulb was still working as recently as Easter this past Spring when I changed the furnace filter. I was surprised to find that typically the bulbs do not last that long. Also they are less effective as the bulbs age. So it was lit but probably not helping much. A couple months later I was in the basement and noticed the old light wasn't lit. I got this 2 bulb unit - with spares - for less than a replacement bulb for the old unit. PLUS everyone was out of stock for a replacement for the old one. But, so far, this seems to be a good unit. installation was pretty easy as I only had to make the existing hole a little larger and folded the small flap inward (out of the way) so I can put the old unit back in if ever needed and if able to find a bulb. I want to install this on the cold side of the coil** A: The bulbs emit ultraviolet "C", NOT "A". The C spectrum is effective at preventing/killing mold, airborne germs, odors and more. All of my bulbs are still working after almost a year. I believe cycling them on/off frequently will shorten their lifespan. **Q: How does one measure the before/after performance of this product?** A: There are two ways to look at: A. Empirically- There is a tangible symptom in your home such as bad smell or a person sensitive to your home’s atmosphere. Install product, remove source of toxicity such as moldy objects in basement or having duct work cleaned. Then see if the problem goes away. See if people are less sick. B. Scientifically measurable. Purchase a suite of lab tests for biological hazards such as for mold to determine a current baseline of toxicity. Install, product and redo test. It’s a UV light like we see in doctors offices, mail salons etc. it kills germs. It’s installed on your Homes HVAC (AC) air intake box. The air sucked into the intake box is sanitized by the UV light as it passes thru the box and then recirculated in your house. We got this for covid. It’s an easy install for a handy man,about 15-20 min. Or your AC guy is probably familiar with it and can install it for you. The difference is his cost plus installation is about $300. You need to replace the build once a year. This one comes with 2 extras.
