I've grown to have a serious love/hate relationship with this part. I love it because it constantly fixes the problem where you barely get hot water. I hate it because the failure rate (especially in showers that ARE NOT used often) seems to be astronomically high -- unquestionably, I've now spent north of $200 on replacement mixer caps and pressure balance units over the past decade. In my most recent replacement, the failing cap literally fell apart as I unscrewed it from the brass valve housing, just like last time. Unbelievable. I can now safely say it is worth keeping one of these and a pressure balance unit on-hand -- there's a near-100% chance you will need them at some point. =============== ORIGINAL REVIEW =============== I was having an(other) issue with one of our Kohler shower faucets where hot water would only be dispensed if the handle was turned to the end of its' range of travel, at which time the overall pressure dropped significantly. After cracking open the handle assembly and making some tweaks to the anti-scalding collar (to no avail) I decided to order both this mixer valve and the pressure balance cartridge I had replaced in two other Kohler assemblies in our home. Once the parts came (thank you, Prime), I pulled the original mixer valve out and it, more or less, came apart in my hands. I re-seated the O-rings in the pressure balance cartridge and reaffixed the mixer cap to the brass housing. I turned the water back on for a test and sure enough, it was working perfectly now AND with better pressure than before. Bonus. Ten minutes later I had everything reassembled and re-caulked. Job done. I'm considering keeping one of these as a spare since the guts of these Kohler fixtures seem to fail with such regularity. If you're having any sort of issue with your Kohler fixture, chances are it's either this or the pressure balance cartridge. Buy them both and you (probably) can't go wrong. I'm on the handy side, so replacing this for me was not a big deal. After about five minutes, my shower goes cold even though there is still hot water at the sink.** A: I just spoke with Kohler Customer Service about a similar issue I'm having. They said issues related to temperature are caused by the PRESSURE BALANCING UNIT. If you had a leak or non-temperature issue, then you should replace the MIXER CAP. **Q: how to adjust the Kohler shower facet to get hotter water** A: There is a safety stop that is adjustable with an allen wrench. This is to prevent scalding. I just adjust my water heater to a safe temp and leave the the stop screw out all the way. The allen screw is just behind the O ring where the the knurled shaft is. I wish I can adjust it so it wouldn't drip when off, which is always worse in the winter.
