They definitely are real and not glass -- plus, they have a Wonderful 'feel' to them! My set all were 1/2- to 3/4-inches in size, which I'm Very Pleased with! They'll be prefect for creating Crystal Grids! All of them are smooth with a great variety of colors from lighter to deeper purples. I was amazed that they weren't chipped or broken, b/c they were in a heavier plastic bag and then Amazon shipped them in a bubble mailer, which wasn't folded over to give some extra padding. Anyway, it worked Just Fine! :-) Sorry the picture is kind of dark & doesn't do justice to the lovely purples of the darker stones - I'm taking it at night b/c if I don't write this review now, it probably won't get done!
