They are just a couple of months old and need "tummy time." This surface is definitely extra thick and has a little flex (so not too hard) but definitely firm enough that there is no concern of any pieces easily tearing off or being able to be chewed off. One of my other grandchildren has had a similar playmat since about six months of age and is going on four years old now and they still use it! The mat is in the corner of the family room with toys near by as a "play zone" where he can sit and crawl without being on the hard floors or a rug (that could hold dust and is not as comfortable).
