Why Is Testing Water Hardness Important? You may have felt the effects of hard water, literally, the last time you washed your hands. Depending on the hardness of your water, after using soap to wash you may have felt like there was a film of residue left on your hands. When using hard water, more soap or detergent is needed to get things clean, be it your hands, hair, or your laundry. You can also notice some spots or film on glass dishes after unload them out of in the dishwasher. When hard water is heated, such as in a home water heater, solid deposits of calcium carbonate can form. This scale can reduce the life of equipment, raise the costs of heating the heating the water, lower the efficiency of electric water heaters, and clog pipes. Measuring the Total Water Hardness with AQUAX Test Kit The AQUAX has been designed in One-Reagent (Hardness Indicator Buffer Solution) for easy, quick and correct determination of water quality by Titrimetric Method. The easy drop-and-see application provides reliable results within few seconds. TEST METHOD Fill the test container with the water to analyzed, shake for two or three times and pour off. Fill 5 mL water sample to be analyzed. Add 1 drop from hardness indicator Buffer Solution and shake the test container. a) If the water sample color turns into green-bluish, no hardness is present. In this case, finalize the experiment and report it as Zero Hardness. b) If the water sample contains any hardness, the color will turn into pink-reddish. If the color turns pink – reddish continue adding hardness indicator Buffer Solution drop by drop shaking after each drop and observing the color. When the color turns into green-bluish finalizes the experiment. RESULT: The number of drops spent during the experiment is recorded as amount of hardness in German unit (°dH). 1 drop = 1 German Hardness= 17.8 mg/L CaCO31 dH (German Hardness) = 1,04 GPG (Grains per Gallon)

Review: Just what I needed. - Our county water is incredibly hard. I installed a water softener so I could stop replacing fixtures. To set it up properly, I had to know exactly how hard the water was, but the county doesn't publish that number, and won't give a straight answer when asked. I tried the strip test kits, but they are unreliable; no two strips give the same answer. The pro test kits are way more expensive than I could justify. Found this and decided to give it a try. Really glad I did. This turned out to be a great test kit at a very reasonable pride The repeatability is great, every time I do a test, the result is the same. 18 grains untreated, 0 after the softener. I can't really comment on the absolute accuracy without paying for a commercial test to compare it with, but I used the results to set up the regen cycle on my softener, and it's working exactly as it should, so it must be close. Results were very easy to read, no ambiguity. There's enough testing solution for many tests, even at the high usage my water required. The only weird thing about it is it gives results in some German units called DH. Not an issue because DH is only 4% different than GPG, the standard US units. That's well within the accuracy of a dropper and vial test like this. Convert it (x 1.04), or pretend it's in GPG and call it good.

Bought this kit to test the performance of our water softener and to determine if our outdoor spigots provided soft or hard water. Obvious color change to signify hard/vs soft. I had previously tried test strips and they were useless.
