It compresses COMPLETELY to the same consistency as a hard rubber welcome mat, ...like tire rubber. It quickly comes completely back, like good memory foam should, but that doesn't make for a good chair pad! It is the same density as my bed, for which it is GREAT, i.e., when my full weight is distributed over a much larger area it doesn't compress all the way. But again, for the smaller area of a person's bottom, it DOES compress it all the way (unless you weigh as much as a 6-7 yr old, maybe). Another way to put it is that if you compress it between your thumb and forefinger, it VERY easily compresses all the way (the area of your finger and thumb pads being so small it takes no strength whatsoever to compress it all the way), and it actually feels like there is a VERY hard piece of very uniform rubber about an inch and a half thick inside the cushion as you open and close your finger and thumb while moving around the cushion. And you definitely feel like you are sitting on hard rubber after a short while of sitting. On the other hand, if you were to lay 3 of these end to end and lie down on them, it would not compress quite all the way, making it EXTREMELY comfortable as a mattress pad.In other words, I'm still looking for a chair pad for my wheelchair. I'll probably try a gel of greater density.By the way, how did you contact me? It seemed overly firm out of the box (I don't know how some reviews can call it too soft), but on sitting, the foam settles a bit, which is really necessary or you'd feel like you were sitting on wood. I'm finding it quite comfortable (I weigh just under 200 lbs.), and I think it's a pretty good choice. I took away one star because there's no belt to hold the cushion in place on the chair. (Although, in my case, the cushion doesn't seem to want to move around. I had already bought two folding futons from Millard and they gave me a really good sleep even when placed on a hard floor rather than on carpet. So, I think it's a pretty good brand. For my previous try, I bought a similar cushion for $40 from Aeris, about twice the price of the Milliard. The package had been outside in the cold for a while, and when I opened it, the cushion was very hard. I thought it would soften when it warmed up, but it didn't. The cushion stayed hard and pressed on my tail bone. After a short while I was in too much pain to use it any more. Amazon was good about taking the Aeris back for a refund. OH, AND BY THE WAY, some reviews here complained about a bad odor from the polyurethane--which I am very sensitive to. I suppose there are variations, but I smell nothing at all.
