Others also complained about the odor and it did initially smell like the used tires it is made from but we laid it out in a separate area and any easily noticeable odor dissipated in a few days. Any odor is now only evident if one puts his/her nose up close (and once is enough just to satisfy any curiosity). It is advertised as being safe for composite decks which is what we have. It seems like it will be durable and should do the job of keeping bbq debris or the occasional ember from reaching our deck floor. We have grilled a few times with it underneath and so far, so good.
