I found out about mamajuana through a friend at work who has family on the island, and got really interested when I heard about its Taino origins. I tried some of his and was kind of thrown by the strange blend of flavors. I had to get some for myself. I was skeptical about buying from an American seller, and ordering online in general(the Dominicano gets his brought over from the island) but I'm definitely impressed with the product. The first thing to stand out is how much is packed into the bottle; the thing is packed right up to the neck and there is a nice variety of ingredients distributed throughout. The aroma, even dry, is strong and aromatic. After reading around and asking the Dominicano for advice, I cured it with wine and white rum for two weeks and let it macerate in 80% gold rum 20% honey for one week before tasting. I was surprised how well the flavors infused in just a week. The taste is woody with a strong anis and mild cinnamon underneath. The liquor is thickened by the honey and retained the reddish color and slightly fruity aftertaste from the wine I cured it with, even though I didn't add any more for maceration. I'm hooked. The flavor is great and I can say from my experience so far that after one shot my sore throat was gone and my sinuses cleared up. Cons: the only downside to the bottle being so full is that you end up with around half a bottle of liquid at the end. After I took the last sip from my first batch, I immediately regretted now getting a bigger bottle. On the upside, the smaller size allows the ingredients to infuse pretty quickly and I've had a new batch ready for the last three weekends with good strength and flavor. Out of curiosity, I bought a pack of dry herbs from the other seller on desertcart(K-rla). They ship directly from the island and the price is a little lower, but I wasn't impressed when I got the package in the mail. The aromatic woods looked lower quality and there were maybe six leaves, two anis estrella, and no roots in the whole pack. It's still curing so I don't know about flavor, but the difference in quality and the number of ingredients is pretty obvious. To sum it up: I'm very impressed with Don Zavier Mamajuana and look forward to many more batches and hopefully getting a bottle that holds enough to last more than a thirsty night or two. We went through customs/immigration and security. Once inside the airport, on the way to our boarding gate there was a store that sold both prepared bottles and strictly dry ingredients. I picked a prepared bottle. We were asked by the sales clerk if we had connecting flights in the states, we did. She picked a sealable bag and told us we would be fine to bring it the rest of the way home in our carry on as we had already checked our other luggage. Upon arrival at our connection in Charlotte, NC we had to go through the entire process of customs/immigration/security again. This included what was stated on the sign as a "luggage re-check". Security told us we were not allowed to have this as a carry on and we would need to start all over at the beginning, checking this bag and going through immigration/customs and security again, or surrender it right then. He told us it would be free of charge to check the bag because we were missinformed at the Dominican Republic Airport. My boyfriend took the bag back to "check it" only to then be told there was a $25.00 charge to check a bag. Needless to say, we just surrendered the $6.00 bottle, but he still had to go through the whole hurry up and wait process of immigration/customs and security again . Funny thing is, once completely cleared to enter the gate areas, there were more stores selling it. I guess if you don't have a connector flight, you can carry on a bottle if purchased inside the airport. If you DO have a connector, wait until you are at your last connection to get it, or do what I'm doing and buying it on line. The entire thing seemed like a scam, we could carry it on from the Dominican to the US and if Charlotte was our final stop, it wouldn't have been an issue.. I will be purchasing the dry ingredients on through Amazon and making it from scratch. This was a very frustrating experience and a time wasting learning curve. Most people use a combination of rum, sweet red wine and honey. I personally like rum and honey. If you have the smaller bottle your gonna want to add about 500ml of rum(or rum and wine) along with 3oz of honey. If you want it sweeter add more honey in 1oz increments until it is right where you lime it. Please remember that the first two batches are really strong and bitter.
