While rinsing a bit will float up. I have a 3 1/2 gallon tank and it does hold 4 plants down very well. **Q: How many bags for a 5 gallon tank and how deep should it be?** A: I have a 3 1/2 gallon and 1 bag covers and 1 1/4 inches deep. **Q: Can I use this sand with my betta fish, and artificial plants** A: I don't see why not, although it's a good idea to rinse before adding. **Q: Can you clean this with a gravel vacuum?** A: I think it would just suction it all up. Rich and luxurious looking. A bit pricey for a small bag but seemed worth it after seeing it. I rinsed the sand thoroughly before using it. I was replacing some very ugly blue gravel in a 2 gallon Nano Tank. The 2 fish were thriving before. After replacing with the black sand I noticed the fish were not acting normal. Floating in unnatural positions. I immediately checked water parameters did a partial water change and they seemed better. After a day they again were struggling. They did die after a few days. I have a second nano tank I had been cycling. I had also used the same sand in this tank. it was going to be for a small school of neon tetra. I put the tetras in before I went to bed. By morning they were all dead. Ive been keeping various fish for 40 years so this seemed out of the ordinary. I had checked everything so I concluded it had to be the sand. I removed the sand from both tanks and replaced with a black aquarium gravel. Since then both tanks are up and running with same species of fish and they are thriving. I ended up taking the sand and using it on one of my bonsai trees as decoration on top of soil. Believe it or not my bonsai tree also died.
