Creates a better water circulation and distribution of fertilizer and co2 if you have a planted aquarium. Also depending on the strength of your canister filter and tank size there should be no need to add a wave maker, if your using lily pipe. Im using it on my fluval fx6 on a 75g which the flow is even greater with the lily pipe.
