They come with a template for the mounting hardware placement but I found it easier to just measure. They are easy to open and close with two hands but are a little awkward, but doable, with one hand. I cannot speak to how durable or resistant they would be for someone or something that was determined to get through (or over) them, but they work well as a deterrent.
