The wood has been left completely natural, so it can be used as-is or finished with a light brushing of flaxseed oil or mineral oil for more water resistance. It's a knob on a stick, and I wondered if I was being silly to spend this much on such a simple item.  And maybe I was silly, but it's a really NICE knob on a stick, and it works GREAT for packing kraut. Really, it's a tremendous help, and I'm glad I got it.
